Although dentistry itself can be dated back to 5000 BCE, the concept of pediatric dentistry is much newer. In fact, it’s only been around since the 1900s. It began more specifically 1913, when the Fones Clinic for Dental Hygienists in Bridgeport, Connecticut sent young female students into the local schools to clean children’s teeth. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, a woman by the name of Minnie Evangeline Jordon opened her own pediatric dental clinic after she was encouraged by studies on the effects of sugar on the teeth.
Growing Up: The Mid 1900s
By the 1940s, pediatric dentistry was officially recognized as a specialty by the American Dental Association, raising awareness of children’s dental health and increasing the amount children who visited their dentist by 50 percent! This in turn encouraged the creation of The Pediatric Dentistry Training Program, which aimed to treat more children as well as children with special needs.
Modern Mouths: The 1990s and Beyond
Years later, in the 1990s, the Secretary of Health and Human Services published a report that related children’s oral health to their overall health. This encouraged the American Dental Association to recommend children begin dental care before their first birthday.
Today, pediatric dentistry is alive and well. Kids up to age 19 are frequently covered on dental insurance plans through parent employers, and more than 86 percent of children visit their dentist at least once a year!
Remember, although pediatric dentistry wasn’t always a popular concept, today it helps millions of children each year protect their oral and overall health through regular dental examinations and cleanings.
