What is General Anesthesia?

An IV drip

General anesthesia is a more powerful form of dental sedation that is commonly used on patients who exhibit extreme dental anxiety or who are preparing to undergo multiple dental treatments. Once administered, the child will remain unconscious throughout treatment so that they remain unaware of what is happening during a procedure.

Dr. Kevork will administer the medication to ensure safety and comfort before closely monitoring your child and making any necessary adjustments while in the treatment chair.

Is General Anesthesia Right for My Child?

Our team at Purdy Pediatric Dentistry is unlikely to recommend this type of sedation in most cases. However, there are certain instances that may warrant general anesthesia, especially if:

  • Your child has severe dental anxiety, making it difficult for you to keep their six-month appointments because of their intense fear.
  • Your child does not react well to nitrous oxide or oral conscious sedation.
  • Your child needs multiple dental procedures (i.e., extracting several teeth, etc.) that can take ample time to complete.
  • Your child has physical or developmental needs that increase their inability to sit still for longe periods.
